INTERVIEW

Please describe your artistic themes
I’m not sure I can peg myself to a “theme”, but I do tend to be compulsively honest, if you wanna call that a theme. A lot of my writing tends be transparent responses to the life that’s going on around me and working all that out; whether it’s relationships, life, God, hope, or despair.

Please describe your creative process
A while back, I used to be a purely inspirational writer…only jotting something down when I was “moved” by a moment. But waiting for that moment to come could last days or even months! These days, I tend to take a more disciplined 9-5 approach. Just simply choosing to sit down and play my guitar/piano or grab a pen and start writing on a daily basis works much more effectively. The inspiration does comes as I make myself available. I recommend reading “The War of Art” by Steven Pressfield.

What are your artistic goals?
The saying goes, “You’re only as good as your last song.” I wanna continue to challenge myself to write the best songs. And the best doesn’t mean it has to be a grammy-award-winning smash hit every single time. For me, it means, for whatever particular project I’m working on, I wanna give it everything I got. And at the end of the day, some songs are meant for your living room and others are meant for the world to hear.

What are your views on the industry?
It’s a very interesting time we live in. Never before has the industry been so groomed for the independent artist. I don’t have to spend a lifetime waiting to get signed by a major label in order for my music to get heard. . I look at guys like Bright Eyes or Death Cab and their stories are amazing. They were “label-less” for so long.

What advice would you give to emerging artists?
I believe every person is created and designed uniquely for a specific purpose and with God-given talent and ability. There’s no two people identically alike on the planet. So be true to the artistic expression inside of you so the world can hear or see it and be a risk-taker. You’ve got nothing to lose.
