EMILY SUNDBLAND + MATT SWEENEY: FOR SHIRLEY COLLINS

NEW YORK, NY (April 14, 2015) Last night, White Columns, Algus Greenspon, House of Gaga, and The Green Gallery presented Emily Sundbland + Matt Sweeney, in celebration of the launch of their new album, For Shirley Collins at The Church of St. Luke in the Fields.

While Sweeney provided a soft layer of acoustics, Sundbland’s soothing voice created a charming echo and resonance, filling the environment of the chapel venue. As they played along, she reminded me of Joni Mitchell and Stevie NicksLandslide, as if it had been split apart into a collection charmingly rural melodies of the nostalgic countryside.

One particular highlight of the event was the conduction of a melody entitled I Dreamed Last Night of My True Love. It transported me to a place that I can describe as a rustic fairytale.

Though if there were a flaw in the whole performance, I’d say it occurred in the vocal aspect of the performance. Sundbland’s solo soprano had me soothed to the core, sending me off to a universe where I could watch amber waves of grain in peace. Yet there were several occasions that Sweeney provided backup vocals to Sundbland’s chords where it really wasn’t necessary. However, from beginning to end, it was clear that Sundbland could carry a tune and grab our attention.

All in all, the performance of Sundbland and Sweeney’s combination of guitar and voice proves to be a decent addition to anyone’s collection of folk songs. If you crave folk music, go see them.
